Gary was born in Hong Kong to his Chinese migrant parents. Although brought up in a traditional Chinese family, the colonial society and the foreign cultures influenced his upbringing profoundly. The French impressionists, especially, Claude Monet and Edgar Degas made huge impacts on Gary artistically. Gary graduated from LSAD in June 2017, conferred with second class, grade one honours degree in Fine Art, Painting.
